The legend of the birth of Rome comes from far away in time and space. It brings us back to the city of Troy, destroyed by the greek army, probably in the 12c BC. Aeneas, a Trojan prince, left the island after the defeat, bringing along his father Anchises and his son Julo. After many ups and downs, he arrived in Italy and married Lavinia, King Latinus' daughter. Aeneas became himself king of a new town named Lavino, and then his son lulo founded the town of Albalonga, on the Albani Hills. Thirty kings reigned over Albanonga before the wise Numitor, who was killed by his ambitious and cruel borther Amulio, who usurped the throne. He forced his niece Rea Silvia, to become a Vestal. The priest-women of the golddess Vesta were not allowed to get married, thus Amulio was sure he had prevented anybody to claim the power. God Mars fell in love with Rea Silvia and joined together with her, she born him two twin brothers, Romulus and Remus. When king Amulio discovered the babies, he condemned Rea Silvia to be buried alive and ordered to abandon the twin brothers in a basket on the river, aiming at killing them. But the basket came to stop against the slopes of the Palatine Hill, among the roots of a fig-tree. the babies were found there by a she-wolf, that brought them in its den and suckled them as they were its own cubs. Then a shepherd named Faustulus found the children and brought them up. Once adults, Romulus and Remus got to know their story and took revenge on their uncle Amulio, whom they killed. They decided then to found a new city on the hill where they had grown up. They consulted the birds to decide who would be the king: the omens indicated Romulus, who traced a furrow in the gfound, marking the sacred border of the new town. Remus overcame the furrow and entered the sacred area, and for this reason his brother killed him.The foundation of Rome dates traditionally from 21st, April 753BC. Romulus reigned for forty years, then he mysteriously disappeared during a storm as he was standing in the place now occupied by the Pantheon. He was worshippped as the god Quirinus. The she-wolf is still the symbol of the city: a Etruscan bronze statue, dating from the 5C BC, is now at the Musei Capitolini. The twin brothers underneath were added by the sculptor Antonio Pollaiolo. the statue of the Lupa Capitolina was offered to the city by Pope Sixtus IV in 1471, along with many other ancient works of art coming from the collection of the Lateran Place. Mars was the Italic god of agriculture and seasons. As god of war he was very important for Romans. His sacred tree was the oak.

You know, the full story isn't so famous, but very well-known are some parts of it. In fact, the most interesting one is Aeneas' trip to Italy. Virgilio (a latin writer) wrote an extremely famed book called Aeneid, which is, for italian students, one of the most important text of epic poetry, together with Homer's Iliad and Odyssey.
We must (actually should ;-) ) read it in Italian and Latin as well, even if we can hardly understand something!
Another interesting thing is the origin of the story. At the apogee of Roman Empire, during Octavius Augustus's reign, he asked Virgilio to create a legend to glorify his family (Gens Julia), because Augustus was not proper son of Julius Caesar but he was adopted. Thus Virgilio wrote the Aeneid, which was really his masterwork!
Fabio
Fabio, thank you for telling me the important story about Rome. I translated it into Chinese for favoring all my friends or relatives to know it.
